A myTuner Radio alternative for Android

myTuner Radio is a large, well-established radio app — tens of thousands of stations across a couple of hundred countries, plus a very big podcast catalogue, Chromecast, Android Auto and a sleep timer. It is a lot of app.

The friction people hit is the money side. The free version is ad-supported. Removing ads is an in-app purchase. There is also a separate paid Pro app. Which one you have bought, and what it entitles you to, is not always obvious, and purchases do not transfer between platforms.

Musika takes the other approach: nothing to work out. Free, no ads, one optional one-time unlock, done.

How the money works, side by side

myTuner — the free version includes all stations, podcasts and charts, supported by visual ads. Removing ads is an in-app purchase, and there is a separate myTuner Radio Pro app; the ad-free tiers also add an equaliser, Car Mode and play-at-startup. Purchases are tied to the store account and operating system family — a Google Play purchase does not carry to iOS.

Musika — free with no ads. The free tier caps favourites at five and custom stations at two. One purchase of A$3.49 removes both caps permanently. No subscription, no second app, nothing else to buy.

What else differs

• Tracking. Musika collects nothing in the app — no usage data, no listening history, no identifiers. Favourites live on your device. myTuner's Play listing discloses data sharing with third parties. If you want to compare properly, read the Data Safety section on each Play listing rather than taking either developer's word for it.
• Podcasts. myTuner has a very large podcast library. Musika has none. If podcasts are part of why you use a radio app, Musika will feel like a downgrade.
• Custom streams. Musika lets you paste in a direct stream URL and save it as a station — useful for small local stations, community radio and anything the directory has missed.
• Station detail. Musika shows country, language, tags, bitrate, codec, the community vote count and a link to the station's own website before you commit to listening.

Where myTuner is the better choice

• Podcasts. Not close. myTuner has them, Musika does not.
• Breadth of platform support. myTuner runs on Apple Watch, Apple TV, CarPlay, Sonos and Google Home as well as Android. Musika is Android only.
• You want an equaliser or a dedicated Car Mode. Musika has neither.
• It is included in your Google Play Pass. If you already subscribe, myTuner is available through Play Pass without ads or in-app purchases, which changes the cost argument entirely.
