A TuneIn alternative for Android

TuneIn is the default answer for internet radio on Android, and it has earned that — a huge catalogue, podcasts, live sport, and it works nearly everywhere.

The reason people go looking for an alternative is almost always the same: the free app is ad-supported, and the ways out of that are a paid Pro version or a recurring subscription. If you just want to listen to a music station without either, that is more product than you need.

How TuneIn's tiers work

TuneIn has three things people routinely confuse, so worth being precise:

One thing worth knowing whichever tier you are on: ads the broadcaster puts into their own stream are outside TuneIn's control and play regardless. That is true of every internet radio app, Musika included. No app can strip ads out of a station's own broadcast, and anyone claiming otherwise is misleading you.

• No ads at any tier. Not "no ads if you pay" — there is no ad layer in the app at all. The free tier and the unlocked tier show the same interface.
• One-time unlock, not a subscription. The free tier caps you at five favourites and two custom stations. A single A$3.49 purchase removes both permanently. There is nothing else to buy and nothing that renews.
• No account. No sign-up, no email, no login.
• No analytics in the app. Musika collects no usage data, listening history or identifiers. Your favourites stay on your device.
• Add your own stream URL. If you have a direct stream address for a station the directory has missed, you can save it as a custom station. TuneIn does not offer this.

Where TuneIn is the better choice

Be honest with yourself about what you want from the app:

• You listen to podcasts. TuneIn has a very large podcast catalogue. Musika has none and none are planned — it is a radio app.
• You follow live sport. TuneIn Premium carries play-by-play rights that do not exist elsewhere. If you want NHL or college football, Musika cannot help.
• You want commercial-free news. TuneIn Premium's ad-free news network streams are exclusive to that subscription.
• Your car or speaker already has TuneIn built in. That convenience is real and Musika will not replicate it.

If any of those matter to you, stay with TuneIn. Musika is not trying to be a bigger TuneIn — it is trying to be a smaller one.
